The Rainbow Committee at St. Christopher's Church is part of our outreach ministry and has two aims:
Here are some of the things we hope to do in our community:
- To resource and educate St. Christopher's about the issues that affect the LGBTQ community and to enable us to become a more welcoming, affirming and safe Church for LGBTQ people.
- To build bridges to the LGBTQ community; to continue the work of healing and reconciliation and to let them know that there is a welcoming and affirming Church in their Community.
We aim to make our space welcoming and leave the tell-tale signs that it is a 'safe place'. We continue to fly the pride-flag to mark important days for the LGBTQ community. We aim to ensure that we are listed on websites that help LGBTQ people find safe Churches.
We have hosted an education series, passed a vestry motion as a Church, and encourage our whole congregation to understand the issues around inclusivity and welcome. We are beginning to build up a library of resources for children, teens, and adults including movies, books and advice leaflets. We ask our liturgy and learning groups and ministry development leadership to examine our language and make sure it is inclusive and that issues of inclusion are part of our education programming and training for our welcomers, and children and youth work volunteers.
We will enable our faith community to be a voice against homophobia and transphobia both in the local community and on the national and international stage as issues and struggles arise.
